Who’s in the band and what are your roles?

What’s your ‘origin story’? 

D: As The Gadgets, we started in Summer 2023. We’ve always played and jammed together. My Dad has been playing in bands and as a solo artist for years and he used to work as a music teacher.

K: Being Father & Son I’ve known Danny since 14th October 2008. Finding a good drummer is hard, so his Mum & I made one instead!

Who are your biggest influences?

D: Little Barrie, Reverend Horton Heat, Led Zeppelin, The Meteors

K: The Beatles, Howlin’ Wolf, Nina Simone, The La’s, Miles Davis

How would you describe your sound?

K: Well, we are writing fairly constantly and trying to develop the sound. It’s fun to try and get the most sonically out of the duo format. At gigs we’ve been told we sound like Scotty Moore jamming with the Ramones, Captain Beefheart fronting The White Stripes and (my favourite) Johnny Cash jamming with The Cramps backstage at San Quentin!

D: We’ve been described as a Rockabilly Black Keys, but to me it’s more Psychobilly and unhinged Surf music.

What’s been the highlight of your music career so far?

D: Supporting James Oliver at The Ship Inn, Gillingham. He’s one of my favourite guitarists. Also he had Norman Watt- Roy on bass!

K: Being in The Gadgets with my son is without doubt the highlight of everything I’ve ever experienced playing music. It’s joyous!

What’s coming up in the future for you? 

D/K: Mainly playing more gigs – we love it playing live. We are starting to really hit our stride now. We are going to release more songs – two more this year and two in early 2027. We’d like to get on more festival dates and hopefully tour. We’ll see!

Favourite song of yours!

D ‘Half Time Break’. It’s one of our newest songs and the groove is ace.

K At the moment, ‘Kissing Statues’. I love the chord riff that opens it and the lyric rings true.

Your craziest tour experience.

K: We haven’t had the chance to tour yet. Our craziest experience though was breaking down in an electric car on the way back from a gig literally a mile from home. Needing to charge fast, we used an app which took us to someone’s house, Then we drove past the newly installed charging point at the supermarket before grinding to halt at the top of a hill. Danny then ran home to wake my partner. A tow truck arrived four hours later. It was like an episode of Only Fools & Horses.

Your dreams for the future! How would you describe them?

D: Make an EP and more gigs with bands we like.

K: Much like Danny really. It’s been challenging to establish ourselves but I really believe in this band and if we can keep writing good music and playing live, I think we can do it.

The person you’d most like to share a stage with, living or dead.

D: Reverend Horton Heat – one of my top 3 bands. Flat Duo Jets – their sound and attitude is so similar to us. X Ray Cat Trio – Such a great band and I love their EP ‘I Lied’.

K: It’s funny because when I asked Danny this question, I was thinking of exactly the same bands! Reverend Horton Heat has had such a massive impact on our writing and sound. Similarly with Flat Duo Jets, their raw power blows me away. X Ray Cat Trio – I love their sound. You can tell they are real students of the history of Rock & Roll and Rockabilly. I think Nico is a phenomenal guitar player. I saw him walk past me at a gig in Birmingham a couple of months back. I wanted to fan boy him but I bottled it!

 A song or a moment where you fell in love with Rock n Roll.

D: I’ve always loved it. I can remember hearing ‘Get Rhythm’ by Johnny Cash sitting in the back of the car when I was three years old.

K: I think being born/growing up in a certain time it’s ubiquitous really. I can remember the Teddy Boy who lived next door to my grandparents blasting out ‘Rock Around The Clock’. The first song I learnt using barre chords was ‘C’mon Everybody’, which took me back to the Levi’s adin the 1980’s that it featured in. Eddie Cochran is a big hero of mine and he’s totally underrated as a guitar player. The lightning bolt was definitely Gene Vincent’s ‘Race With The Devil’. Cliff Gallup’s first solo is the greatest ever recorded.

We took a listen to The Gadgets’ latest single, ‘Robinson Resigns’…

​If you’ve been keeping an ear to the ground across the underground scene lately, you might know there’s a fresh band called The Gadgets -an exciting new father and son duo who are rapidly making waves across the scene, gaining support slots to rockabilly, psychobilly, garage, and punk bands!

​The standout element here is undeniably the guitar work. There’s Los Lobos vibes – reminiscent of tracks like “Don’t Worry Baby.” They state Elvis’ ‘Baby Let’s Play House ‘ as a big inspiration for this track, but with their own undoubtedly garagey edge.

​Lyrically it captures the frustration of being stuck in a dead-end job, trapped in Zoom calls and a corporate lanyard labelling you. This is delivered with an effortless, swaggering rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

​ The dynamic between father and son brings an authenticity and tight musical interplay that’s hard to fake. Whether you’re a greaser, a psychobilly, or a garage punk enthusiast, The Gadgets are a band you definitely want on your radar.

​This is a cool, twang heavy anthem for anyone ready to quit their day job and rediscover themselves.
