Let’s skip to the good bit: psychobilly innovators Rezurex are planning their next release. This news comes hot on the heels of the news that they’re heading on tour in April across Europe, and we’re beyond excited to welcome them back.

“We were invited to play in Finland at the Olaf Goes Psycho Festival and decided to book a few more shows in Europe/UK while we are this side of the world,” explains frontman Daniel deLeon. “A big thanks goes to our fans that patiently waited to see us play. It’s not easy to travel so far and we do our best to visit , and this applies to all countries including the states. We’ve had bad luck with booking agencies but now I think I found the right one, so we’ll possibly see you all next year, too!”

If you’re new to Rezurex, think charismatic, idiosyncratic and gorgeously cinematic horrorpunk at the far reaches of psychobilly. For DeLeon, the Rezurez sound came naturally to him. “I’ve always been into this style of music. When I was young I was really into Stray Cats and Misfits. I started out at a punk guitarist and gradually went into more rockabilly but still keeping that punk edge. I’m not a lead guitar player, so I kept those influences in my rhythm guitar. Vocals came later when I started Rezurex in 2002. My influences for that was The Damned, Misfits, Billy Idol and maybe a touch of Elvis.”

The last time we heard from Rezurex in the studio was for 2020’s ‘Skeletons’, and it’s a favourite for the singer. “I feel like it’s the best work we’ve ever done for Rezurex, even to today, including how well it was recorded this time. I have evolved in my vocals and songwriting since we first started.” The standout song from ‘Skeletons’ is the lead single, ‘Mi Calavera Di Amor’, and it’s an absolutely brilliant tale of love after death. “I’m very happy the way this song turned out. It was experimental because it’s not exactly psychobilly or horrorpunk but it’s a dark romantic rock song. The song is about finding a girlfriend buried in the forest and wishing you could bring her back from the dead.   I’ve always been obsessed with skulls, Day of the Dead and Halloween anything I would collect. Halloween always fascinated me, ghost stories, monsters, anything related to the supernatural. It inspires me for my song writing. What’s funny is that we filmed the music video in the middle of the pandemic in 2020; it was the first time taking off the masks around people. Weird times! But I am very happy of the final cut of the music video.”

It’s not been entirely quiet on the Rezurex front since ‘Skeletons’ though: we did recently get a re-release of Rezurex’s 2006 debut, the fabulous ‘Beyond The Grave’. “Finally, after many years of requests for the re-release we did it. After Fiendforce Records (Germany) failed I just never got around to putting back online. Some of the original master tapes were lost too. We managed to re-mix half the album because it was recorded at two separate studios. But all of it was re-mastered. Sounds amazing to me now and nostalgic.”

As if that wasn’t enough, we’ve also been led to the dark side by Project Skeleton, deLeon’s other musical avenue. “Project Skeleton was my pandemic acoustic project, I had so much time to work on those songs and during the end of the pandemic I could play acoustic in venues just as a solo act. It’s a mix of new originals, Rezurex acoustic versions and some 80’s goth and alternative songs, but I changed those songs to be more gothabilly, we’ve covered Tears for Fears, Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Damned, Eurithmics, and Depeche Mode.”

Will deLeon’s next album sound more Rezurex or more Project Skeleton? Will it chill us to our bones or breath new life into our love for the California psychobillies? All we know is that it’s coming soon, and it’s going to be briliant. “For Rezurex we are working on the new songs, so this year we will be trying to record the new album if everything goes as planned. I have several new songs, just need to see which ones fit best for us. I can’t wait to share my new material to the world, I feel like it’s getting better.”

A new tour AND a new album in the works? This is already shaping up to be the year of Rezurex.
