An outtake from the Broadway Twisters’ debut album, ‘South by South West 2’, their official/unofficial version of Jace Everett’s True Blood theme with a bit of the Doors and The Chantays thrown in just for good measure.
Features guests Tim ‘Thunder Thumbs’ Pearson from the Boot Heel Playboys on keys and Pip Mailing (James Burton/Quireboys) on drums.
This reimagining has only ever been previously released on the Bad Blood on the Tracks Vol. #1 CD from the mighty Always a Hit Records label.
This is a masterclass in how to cover an iconic song. It’s sleazy and dirty, echoing out of a smoke-filled, 1950s underground club. Haunting vocals drenched with reverb and dripping with attitude lead into the rest of the instruments introducing their slick characters, with each being heard individually, as the light in the basement highlights them through the smoky atmosphere. I find it a rare quality in songs to be able to pick out each instrument separately, as if you’re stood in the room in the middle of the band.
The piano is a backbone of sleaze, teasing the bass and drums to join in with this late-night soiree. The early-hours-of-the-morning vibe persists throughout, until they all saunter, still buzzing, into bed, jumping in with The Doors’ “People Are Strange” and Chris Isaak’s “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing” as the perfect bedfellows.
It’s raw and polished at exactly the same time. A perfect piece of music noir.
‘Bad Things ‘ will be going live on all major platforms within the next week or so. (iTunes, Spotify, Amazon etc) but you can download it right now from their Bandcamp page!
